While teaching the importance of protecting our hunting heritage and giving back to wildlife conservation.
Is the camp for girls too or just boys? This camp is great for boys and girls alike. Women hunters is a fast growing segment and we are happy to see that. We have seperate living quarters for females and several women on staff at the lodge to create a safe atmoshpere.
What age groups attend the camp? Camp Iron Sights is for youth ages 14-22. Slight exceptions can be made on a case by case basis.
What equipment is needed for camp? We will provide you with a complete equipment list, but can accomodate you with most hunting gear if you do not have your own. A few key items are: Rifles, Binoculars, Rain Gear, Knives, and a Camera.
Firearm Questions? Can the youth travel with a rifle? What caliber should they bring? Etc. The Youth may or may not be able to travel with their own rifle depending on their age. They will most likely use a camp rifle that they become familiar and comfortable with prior to hunting. If they do bring their own rifle we suggest something in the 30-06 range through a .300 win mag. Many different calibers may be used and we can discuss that on a per case basis as one of the most important aspects is the comfort level the individual has with the rifle.
Can the youth hunt with a bow? Yes, If the youth has the appropriate Bow Hunter Certification for Alaska which includes a proficiency test. And has shown us that they are competant and accurate shooters. We are working on including Bow Hunter Certification for this camp as well.
